2017 International Forum on Online Engineering Education Held in Beijing

On July 16th, the 2017 International Forum on Online Engineering Education organized by the UNESCO International Engineering Education Center and the International Engineering Technology Knowledge Center was held in Beijing. This forum has been supported by the National Engineering Professional Degree Graduate Education Steering Committee.

In order to improve the quality of engineering education and to train more talents with global competence, Xue Xue Online operates as a support platform for online courses for national engineering degree graduate students. Globalization has an impact on all aspects of life. Technology and digitalization are developing very fast. The global market is undergoing tremendous changes. We need to be flexible and agile to cope with change. In the era of Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things, physical network security system, network security, cloud computing and closed-loop ecosystem, sustainability, and circular economy are the knowledge points needed for future engineering education.

Li Zhiwei, the Science and Technology Development Center of the Ministry of Education, worked through the law of the development of information technology and analyzed the influence of the times on education. He said that technological progress is the fundamental driving force for the progress of human civilization. Human civilization has experienced the agricultural revolution and the industrial revolution one after another, and it is entering the information revolution era. He divides the development of the Internet era into four stages of parallel development: information interconnection, consumer interconnection, production interconnection, and smart interconnection. In his opinion, every major technological invention in history will always lead to discussions on the great changes in education. Technology brings changes in teaching, learning, assessment tools, classroom structure, and classroom morphology. However, due to people's habits of thinking and behavior, often overestimate the impact of technology on education in the near future, and underestimate its impact on the next decade. The arrival of MOOCs does not mean that teachers will soon be unemployed; but if they do not attach importance to and change the way teachers work, it is indeed possible for the next decade to affect careers and career development.

Mr. Li Weiping, Dean of the Muhua Education Research Institute and professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, interpreted problem-driven learning and teaching in engineering education. He believes that traditional higher education is a knowledge-driven, teacher-specific knowledge of specific subjects. But in the age of artificial intelligence, robots have replaced humans in terms of physical labor, and robots will soon replace or surpass people in terms of knowledge. Therefore, we must make fundamental changes in core education.

He said that in May this year, the International Engineering Education Center (ICEE) website was formally launched. At the same time, the school was published online at the online education platform of Lagos University in Africa. This indicates that many high-quality online education resources, including Tsinghua University, have spread more to Africa and are conducive to the development of engineering education in Africa, and have contributed to China's "Belt and Road" strategy.
